Rekordbox is Pioneer DJ's industry-standard software for music management and performance. Whether you're using CDJs in a club or a controller at home, Rekordbox is an essential tool in your DJ arsenal. This guide will get you up and running in under 30 minutes.
What is Rekordbox?
Rekordbox serves two main purposes:

The software comes in two versions:

Good news: If you own a Pioneer controller (like the DDJ-400), you get performance mode for free!

Preparing for a Gig

If you're playing on club CDJs:
- Insert a USB drive (formatted as FAT32 or HFS+)
- Create a playlist with your set tracks
- Drag the playlist to your USB in the tree
- Wait for export to complete
- Safely eject USB
Critical: Always use the Safely Eject option to prevent corruption!
Recommended USB Settings
- Format: FAT32 (for maximum compatibility)
- Size: 32GB minimum
- Speed: USB 3.0 for faster loading
- Backup: Always bring two identical USBs
Pre-Gig Checklist
Before any performance:
- ✅ All tracks analyzed
- ✅ Playlists organized
- ✅ Duplicate tracks removed
- ✅ Cue points set on key tracks
- ✅ USB exported and tested
- ✅ Backup USB prepared
Setting Cue Points and Memory Cues
Cue points help you jump to important parts of a track instantly.
Hot Cues
Set up to 8 hot cues per track:
- Play the track and find your desired point
- Press one of the hot cue buttons (A-H) on your controller
- The point is saved
Common hot cue setup:
- A - First drop
- B - Breakdown
- C - Build-up
- D - Second drop
- E - Vocal start
- F - Outro/mix point
Memory Cues
Memory cues are visual markers without triggering:
- Find the position you want to mark
- Click the Memory button
- Add a comment if needed
Great for noting transitions or energy changes.
Performance Mode Basics
If you have a controller or Core/Pro subscription:
Deck Controls
- Jog wheels - Scratch and nudge beats
- Tempo fader - Adjust BPM
- EQ knobs - High/Mid/Low frequency control
- Filter - Quick frequency sweeps
- Effects - Echo, reverb, flanger, etc.
Sync vs. Manual Mixing
Rekordbox has a Sync button that auto-matches tempo. While convenient, we recommend:
- Learn to beatmatch manually first (see our beatmatching guide)
- Use sync as a safety net, not a crutch
- Master manual mixing for creative control
Essential Settings to Change
Preferences Worth Adjusting
Go to Preferences (Cmd+, or Ctrl+,) and check:
- Audio → Set your audio device (controller or interface)
- Analysis → Enable "Analyze tracks automatically on import"
- View → Choose which columns to display
- Library → Set music folder location
Waveform Display
Customize your waveform view:
- Right-click the waveform area

Recommendation: RGB waveform shows frequency spectrum, making it easier to see vocals and drops.
